Review of Hackney Carriage Fares

Consultation has concluded

Woking Borough Council is commencing its annual review of Hackney Carriage fares for 2022.

The council has a methodology for setting fares which takes costs such as vehicle running prices, depreciation, fuel, insurance, licensing fees, together with drivers earnings and provides a unit price for these costs per metered mile travelled.

The fares set include provisions for taxi drivers to earn a wage, cover costs of running a taxi and provide a service to the public when it is needed; balanced against what is reasonable for the public to pay for such a service.

As fares have not been reviewed in several years, the new methodology takes into account many factors not previously accounted for. Because of this and the fact that over the last year there has been a rise in fuel costs, it is anticipated that fares will go up.

Whilst this may cause some concern from drivers who may worry that this will discourage passengers from using their service, it is important to remember that these are only the maximum figures that can be charged, and drivers can agree with the passenger on the fare for the journey. Drivers must still turn the meter on, and at the end must charge the lower of the two figures.

The data input into the methodology is carefully calculated as per the methodology breakdown and we are consulting with all drivers and other representatives of the trade. If you feel that any of the data is incorrect, please complete the questionnaire so that we can ensure your views are taken into consideration.

It is important to provide as much detail and evidence as possible with your response, such as copies of receipts and journey records to substantiate any figures given.

To make sure that your views are taken into account, please ensure that any objections or representations are received before 5pm on Wednesday 14 December 2022.

If no objections are received, the new meter amounts will come into effect on Thursday 15 December 2022.
